The name derives from serge de Nîmes meaning 'serge from Nîmes'. Nîmes, a city in Southern France, is known for its textiles. The contemporary term 'jeans' comes from the French name (Gênes) for the city of Genoa, Italy. This was where the first denim trousers were made.
