Steyr, city in north central Austria, in the province of Oberosterreich. Steyr is located at the junction of the Steyr and Enns rivers, 31 km (19 mi) southeast of the city of Linz in a rolling, wooded region. A manufacturing and tourist center, the city is dominated by the 10th-century Steyr Castle. The Stadt-Platz (main town square) contains a Renaissance courtyard bounded by three-storied arcades, a number of 17th-century dwellings, and the Rathaus (town hall), which contains a great council chamber and dates from 1765. The Parish Church was built between 1443 and 1522. The sacristan's house, south of the church, is noted as the place where the composer Anton Bruckner completed his last works, between 1886 and 1894. The manufacture of weapons has been an important industry in Steyr since the 12th century, and Steyr is the center of the Austrian iron industry. Population (2001) 39,495.
